This month, companies will be sending out P11D forms to all employees. If you need to submit a self-assessment tax return for the first time this year, you must register by 5 October 2025.  The deadline for sending your completed paper form is 31 October 2025 and 31 January 2026 for online submissions. But why wait? Get it done early and you can save time and stress.

Here are my top reasons to submit your self-assessment early and how my independent team at Backup Accounts can help:

  • Self-assessment doesn’t have to be taxing but working with an independent accountant can make it easier. We do this every day so can streamline the process and often save you money along the way. We’ll be able to talk you through any allowances you’re entitled to and can even help you claim for previous years if you’re eligible.

  • Have all your documents in order and keep your income and expenditure up-to-date throughout the year. This will save a lot of time when completing the online form.

  • You have until 31 January 2026 to pay your tax bill so submitting your forms early means you know what you’ll need to pay and can plan your budget accordingly over the coming months.

  • Do you know if your pension is paid before or after tax? This is one of the main things people overlook when filing their self-assessment. All pension contributions are entitled to the lower rate tax so if you’re paying too much, we can help you claim a rebate.
